This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a class of 30 diverse students, all of whom are identified as gifted. In order to differentiate the learning to challenge all the students, I utilize project-based learning projects and this technology would allow my students to take their projects to the next level.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds and yet were all identified as gifted.

Many speak a second language and they do not all have the same resources at home. Thus, I try to level the playing field at school by providing as much technology as possible in the classroom. Our school is part of the 2nd largest school district in Illinois and pulls students from a wide variety of backgrounds. The amount of technology available at each school is not the same, because some schools have wealthier families which can provide financial support, or they qualify for Title 1 funds. Our school has neither of these opportunities, thus our students do not benefit from the same amount of technology available in the classrooms. I try to stretch the technology available to my students by looking for grant opportunities wherever possible.

My Project

The students in my classroom are challenged through project-based learning, affording them the opportunity to creatively demonstrate what they have learned. These projects need to be completed in class and having these 2 iPad minis would allow them to demonstrate their learning in an innovative manner using technology. I truly believe many students can best demonstrate their learning if given a choice of what platform they would like to use, and these iPad minis would provide some extra choices. In class we have been using many apps already, but with just a couple iPads and 30 students, not everyone can use this technology regularly. It would simply take too long for them to complete each project. Having these 2 mini iPads would allow more opportunities for the students to use this technology to complete their projects and develop the necessary skills needed to be successful in the future.

My students have already shown an interest in coding, green screen apps, augmented reality, stop motion apps, iMovie and many more, yet their ability to practice these skills is limited by our classrooms limited amount of technology.

Many students simply become frustrated by the long wait to use the technology and then don't take advantage of it. Having these 2 iPad minis would shorten the wait and provide more opportunities for the students to develop these skills.
