My Project
There are many disadvantaged populations. All of my students are indigenous children who live on Utah's Ute Indian Reservation. Their heritage can be traced to a variety of tribes.
The school I teach at has K to 8th grade students.
I work with the K-5 mild/moderate population.
These kids come to school without the basic knowledge of how society functions outside of their nuclear family, which often includes generations. Some are non verbal, some are disabled in multiple subjects, some experience daily unmentionable traumas, all are poor, and many can not overcome the challenges they face as indigenous children.
I need some hardware in the form of mini iPads, so that I can give my students the digital tools which can help them learn in reading, mathematics, and writing. Nonverbal students would benefit from the text to speech, and speech to text options available on an iPad. Struggling readers with an IEP or 504 can use BookShare to access reading materials, and benefit from the technology of listening to audio text, as well as following along with highlighted words. Those who need to develop better mathematical computational skills will be able to practice with available free math apps.
You will not just be benefiting children, but generations. To give these children the opportunity to learn in a way that helps them develop further than traditional methods allow, will improve their lives and the lives of their families for years to come.
