This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am new to teaching special education. I teach at a Title I school. I have been given a brand new classroom in the middle of the school year with very little supplies. My students have severe and profound intellectual disabilities. They are non-verbal and wheelchair bound. Some have vision impairments and require feeding tubes as well. These students are sweet as can be and deserve a proper classroom that stimulates their brains. Their smiles brighten up our day, but I'd like to make them smile more often with items that spice up our classroom and their lives.

My Project

Technology is booming in our lives and that includes our children's lives as well. Whether it's at home or school, children are immersed in technology and it has almost become a necessity in the classroom.

With an iPad mini in our classroom, our students would have easier access to technology in our classroom.

We would use the iPad to download fun interactive games to help learn counting, the alphabet, writing, colors, numbers, shapes, etc. Many of my students have CP with limited gross motor skills. They're unable to utilize their legs, so they depend on items being brought to them to learn. We can take the iPad over to the student and have him or her trace the letter of the week, count the items on the screen with physical support, sort items, etc.

I can personally use the iPad to take pictures of the students working hard on projects and IEP goals, then use them in our classroom newsletter or upload the pictures into our work sampling system which is based online. It would make life a lot easier! Any contribution to our project is greatly appreciated by us all! :)
