Every year, I work with an amazing group of students.
They live in a high-poverty area and are all on free lunch. Most are learning English as their second language. They have many difficult challenges in their lives, but come to school every day eager and ready to learn, excited and ready to read.
My Project
Many of the apps that focus on phonological awareness, phonics, and high frequency words use simple, quick phrases to supply immediate feedback to the user. Kids that play video games are used to this same feedback. The "You got it!" exclamation might not be the most actionable type of feedback, but it is providing some a level of feedback to our students.
In addition to immediate feedback, another amazing thing about the iPad mini is that many of the apps are completely customizable. If we are learning about the /p/ sound, I can take pictures and record words in one of the apps to make each experience with the mini specific to our learning of the week. As soon as anything is on the iPad, students are immediately more excited!
Yes, the iPad mini is fun, but it will also bring immediate feedback to my students' independent work time.
I can't wait to see my students' faces when they see the new iPad minis as one of our stations. Help us get there!
