This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Is the iPad for us?!?!?" "We get to use the iPad?!?" These were two of the many questions and exclamations that my students shared when they saw the iPad mini in our classroom.
Every year, I work with an amazing group of students.
They live in a high-poverty area and are all on free lunch. Most are learning English as their second language. They have many difficult challenges in their lives, but come to school every day eager and ready to learn, excited and ready to read.
My Project
Many of the apps that focus on phonological awareness, phonics, and high frequency words use simple, quick phrases to supply immediate feedback to the user. Kids that play video games are used to this same feedback. The "You got it!" exclamation might not be the most actionable type of feedback, but it is providing some a level of feedback to our students. The recent use of our first iPad mini demonstrated to me that this immediate feedback is crucial to my students. I hear them correct themselves and talk to themselves about why they are choosing a certain answer. The feedback allows them to be active in their learning.
In addition to immediate feedback, another amazing thing about the iPad mini is that many of the apps are completely customizable. I can make each experience with the mini specific to our learning of the week. Again, with the mini that we just got, I did this with the sounds, spelling patterns, and high frequency words that we were practicing. Amazing!
Yes, the iPad mini is fun, but it also brings immediate feedback and differentiated, customizable activities to my students' independent work time.
I can't describe my students faces when they saw the iPad mini that arrived this week, so I can't begin to imagine their faces when they see two more in our classroom. Help us get there!
