This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach Kindergarten at an elementary school in San Diego, CA. We are a Title 1 school with low income students, primarily with a Latino population. I have 25 students with 10 boys and 15 girls. Some students have had preschool and some have not. Many students come into Kindergarten not knowing any letters. My job is to get them to recognize and write 26 uppercase and lowercase letters. In addition, they need to learn the sounds for each letter.
My Project
My students use an online website (Starfall) to experiment with letters, words and sounds, as well as math content. It is an invaluable tool that we use every day. Currently, I have a first generation iPad that is useful for its portability. With most of my groups having 6 students and only having 5 desktops, the iPad saves the day. This year I even have one group with 7 kids in a group so an additional iPad and some headphones would really help make sure everyone is getting what they need. It would be useful for me to use as a small group tool, as well, to show video content or to demonstrate new content.
