Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The use of technology has become part of everyday life for most children in the United States. iPads however are considered luxury items for my students. I want my students to be as prepared as others for the future.

My school is located in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood.

The students must be in a lower income bracket to qualify for pre-k. Many of their parents are either from Hispanic countries or are first generation Americans. My four and five year olds come eager and ready to learn about the world around them.

My Project

I can use iPads to reinforce objectives across the curriculum in independent learning centers. In language arts, I will be able to use iTunes to have the children listen to audio books. The children can use the iPads to take pictures which will help with developing oral language. In later grades oral language development is directly related to their reading ability. Apps such as Touch and Write focus on letter and word practice at a variety of levels. Math apps such as Hungry Fish and Math Is Fun help develop number sense by individualizing material for each child. Science apps such as Bill Nye the Science Guy and Sid's Science Fair are especially designed to help school children learn about the science concept of classifications. Pop&Add to 20 and Learn to Count help practice skills for one to one correspondence. Stem science centers will develop skills in exploring magnet and motion energy. Fruit and vegetable Cut ups will let students practice fractions and nutrition concepts.

iPads will help my students be prepared for the future in technology.

They are a great way to help each child succeed, no matter their readiness for school. The children are more engaged and interested in learning using technology rather than paper and pencil activities, plus it is just more FUN! The manipulatives I have chosen will also make learning more engaging. This in turn will help influence their attitudes towards math and science in the future.
