My Students
"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”- Benjamin Franklin.
Imagine not being able to communicate or being afraid of public speaking. Many people take speaking for granted. For many of the students I work with, they experience communication difficulties daily.
I am a Speech-Language Pathologist in a Title 1, public school.
I work with children in Pre-K through 8th grade. I work with children with a variety of communication disorders such Articulation Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Stuttering, and Social Pragmatic Disorders. My students could benefit from technology during speech therapy sessions. The use of the iPad will help improve my students' confidence and their academic grades.
My Project
The iPad will improve my students' ability to communicate effectively with others. Whether it is the child who has difficulty producing sounds such as s or r, the child who is petrified of public speaking, the child who stutters or the child who has difficulty reading and writing. We all know a child who experiences difficulties like this. The child who has difficulty saying their sounds can use the iPad to record themselves and play it back. This auditory visual feedback is a crucial part of articulation therapy. If a child can recognize when they do not produce a sound correctly, this will help them monitor their speech outside of speech therapy. For the child who is petrified of public speaking, they can use the iPad to practice their speeches and then watch their videos. If a child can see what they look like and that they can give a presentation, this will build their self-confidence. The iPad will also be used to scan pages in a textbook and modify classroom worksheets.
My students are motivated to learn and want to improve their communication and academic skills.
The integration of the iPad into my speech sessions will drastically improve their progress. The iPad will assist my students who are visual, kinesthetic, and auditory learners. Research has shown that the more senses you involve, the more someone will learn and retain the information. My students do not have access to technology at home, so they will not receive this auditory visual feedback.
