Even after six years in the classroom, I am still constantly learning from my students. This year, I have been learning a lot about autism to help support one of my students.
My students are an active bunch who love technology.
We use technology in projectable books as a whole class, interactive stories during independent reading, online math manipulatives and use dance videos to pump us up and yoga clips to calm us down!
The children are preparing to use computers to take their benchmark assessments this year and subsequent years. It takes a lot of practice to work on typing, using a mouse, and reading the test on a screen. We have 3 classroom computers that the children can rotate through throughout the day. We have no iPads available for students.
My Project
I'd like to mostly use the iPad with a particular student in my class who has autism. He is super sweet and is highly motivated to work for technology time. I'd like to see him working with an iPad for a couple reasons. First, it's easier to monitor which activities he's working on with pre-loaded apps rather than full range of the Internet. Second, since it's portable, we can use it in the hallways and other difficult transitions. Third, since he LOVES working on the computer, he often gets upset when other children have computer time and he does not which can lead to tantrums :( Finally, I'd like to work with him on discrete trials. I've gotten lots of suggestions for programs...but they're all apps rather that websites.
Having an iPad will allow my student to more easily participate in the General Education setting.
With it, we can ensure that he's working towards his IEP goals but in a manner that it highly appealing to him.
