My Students
Our school is an amazing place. Every year, we are among the top 5% of Seattle Schools for student academic growth per student per year. Our students overcome all kinds of obstacles - poverty, racism, learning English (the majority of our families don't speak English at home). It's an amazing school and I am grateful every day for getting to be a tiny part of it.
I teach beginning middle school Spanish.
My class has everything from kids who don't know a word of Spanish to totally fluent native speakers who just need to practice spelling and formal grammar. I want to be able to meet ALL their needs, so this means having materials for them at a very wide range of skill levels.
My Project
My goal is to never have anyone bored. If students finish their work early, they should have something cool to do to keep learning.
I aim to have a couple of stations with fun activities for kids who have finished classwork, including an iPad with Spanish games and online language lab.
We use Duo Lingo once a week as a class - this is a great online language lab, but it requires the whole class going to the library to spend a period on the computers.
Having an iPad in the classroom means kids could just do a little bit whenever they have spare time in class. It would reward kids who work hard by giving them something fun (and educational!) to do for the rest of the period.
