Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach a special education class at our elementary school. I have a group of energetic and dedicated students who learn best when their needs are met and accommodated. They love hands-on activities and engaging projects that allow their minds to grow and figure out a solution. They love coming to school every day to learn new things and grow personally and academically. I want to provide as many tools as possible to help my students access the curriculum and meet their IEP goals. My students have unique needs; most require visuals, sensory activities to help them focus during instruction.
My Project
My students with autism and learning disabilities require lots of visual scaffolding to comprehend reading, math, science, and history. My students already benefit from videos and pictures from my computer during whole group instruction. However, when it comes to small group instruction, an iPad comes very handily because I can easily pull a visual scaffold from my gallery.
This iPad will be used as a learning tool that provides more than just visuals.
I plan to download apps that will give auditory, tactile learning and communication opportunities. I have two students that are non-verbal; with an iPad, I can download a communication app so my students can start to express themselves through visuals and learn to request their needs. If students can communicate, it will reduce a lot of frustration and decrease unexpected behaviors.
