My Project
At my school, we have a large population of students who read three or four grades below grade level for various reasons: some are new to the English language, others have slipped through the cracks and been passed to the subsequent grade levels without meeting literacy benchmarks.
I am requesting an iPad and case to provide hands-on literacy instruction by using the SIPPS App designed for classroom use.
To ensure students can read English at a proficient level to be successful in all their classes, I teach a class called SIPPS, an acronym for Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words. Think Sesame Street for middle schoolers!
This class is specifically designed for students to learn phonics and practice reading new words. The SIPPS curriculum has a comprehensive app designed for classroom use that uses word decks for each lesson. The app tracks the words students master and removes from repeating in multiple decks, as well as words students struggle with and keeps them in decks and builds in words with similar phonetic patterns as additional practice. Using the iPad app, I can easily track data amongst classes and for individual students and provide a more localized curriculum.
