Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I was hired as a 4th-grade math pull out teacher. As a teacher in a low-income school district -- which has been affected by Hurricane Harvey, my students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Even against all odds, my students persevere. My school is located on the East Side of Houston. We are a Title I campus, where 95% of our 800 students are economically disadvantaged and are on free or reduced lunch. Our campus holds a 30% high-mobility rate, which affects our students academically, socially and emotionally. My students come from southeast Houston. The apartments that surround the school, where the majority of the students live, were so devastated by Hurricane Harvey that most of my students' apartments were flooded and they needed to evacuate. Most of my students are now living with extended family, friends, or in a shelter. Their lives changed drastically just within that horrible week of the Hurricane. I want to continue to support them now that we are back in school. School should be the place they feel safe.Despite their unfortunate circumstances, my students have shown a tremendous amount of perseverance.
My Project
In a generation where technology is booming at an all-time high, teachers may face some road bumps when delivering instruction. My goal is to include more technology into every lesson. Including technology not only grasps my students but helps them maintain focus on the content being delivered. Students are becoming more familiar with technology at a younger age because as a society, we are always striving for more. The iPad would be a great tool for whole-group lessons and/or small-group lesson reinforcement. The students would practice on applications specialized for reinforcing instruction. The iPads can also be used for assessments and review.
