This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know what it is like to grow up in poverty and lack educational materials? This is the life of most of my students. They have a huge hunger to learn, but lack the resources at home and school to really tap into this desire to learn, particularly through the use of 21st century technology.

My students are among some of the most fascinating I have ever worked with.

They are 100% ESL (they comprise 65% of the school) and have a huge range of personalities, from fun to serious and everything in between. They have voracious appetites for learning and are always ready for something new! My students attend a public school in NJ. The school is located in a very high poverty and high crime neighborhood. Very recently, we were affected by Hurricane Sandy and were out of school for two weeks during recovery. This was an interruption that my students could not afford! Virtually all of the students I teach were born in another country and have come here with their families for a better life. Financial struggles are common for them and the purchase of electronic devices for learning do not exist for most of my students. If I can provide for them by building an extensive library of high interest materials, such as this iPad, then I know I can begin to help them become star students!

My Project

Tablets are incredible educational tools because they allow the content to be delivered in a highly desirable way, capture and maintain the interest of the student and expose them to technology they may otherwise not be able to access. iPads, in particular, allow teachers to download tons of apps that can be used for a wide variety of uses. I have already compiled a long list of apps that I am looking forward to downloading and using with my students!

I am a lover and avid user of 21st Century technology in my personal life so I really see its benefit.

I want very much to be able to bring this into my classroom. I think of technology as exciting, adventurous, and motivating, just as my students do. However, unlike many of us, items such as iPads, are things they see from afar but never actually get to be able to use. I am hoping to change that by introducing an iPad into my classroom!
