My Students

Special education can be challenging but extremely rewarding. Especially if you teach in the South Bronx. My students come from a predominately low-income area and come from single-family households. 99% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunches based on their socio-economic backgrounds and 25% of those students are special needs. My students face a multitude of problems in our school. Lack of proper funding for books and other essential needs, growing up in a high crime high poverty neighborhood, and a general culture that doesn't put an emphasis on a strong education.

My students are highly energized and visual learners.

They love working on computers and using technology. In my classroom, I push my students to become job and college ready. Throughout the year we explore how to write resumes, balance checkbooks, plan a dinner party, use Microsoft Office, use Google Drive, and design a house/room/zoo. This way my students are ready for the real world at a young age.

My Project

The students in my classes are half remote and half in the classroom. We live stream our classroom on a daily basis to the students who are at home and cannot join us in the classroom. All of my students are working very hard, but it is difficult for them. They are trying their best but they are struggling. In our special education classroom we are on google meetings and using technology every single period, and as a result, we need up-to-date technology to help us continue our learning journey. A Mac computer would be beneficial for running meetings and for syncing with other devices. I teach ELA and it is often hard to display the required readings/videos we use in the classroom and annotate them remotely. By having a device that is a touch screen that can be written on, annotations can be completed with ease in order to assist with my students' comprehension! Additionally, most of my students are working on i-pads at home and I am working on a computer. When I share my screen to model how to complete their assignments it is often a struggle for them to figure it out how to do it on an I-pad since the websites show up differently on the two devices. I am often unable to assist with trouble shooting problems since my technology is different. Remote learning is tough, especially for my students with special needs. Having up to date and good technology will help them succeed! A MacBook will be beneficial for all students' learning.
