Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Though our school is over 100 years old, I try to bring modern-day skills to the classroom. I share video documentaries, use storybook applications, and writing prompts on my personal iPod touch, but I would like to reach more students with each activity.

My students come from many walks of life, with many different background experiences, and live in an urban setting.

I would like to give each child an equal opportunity to explore the world using various modern media, including the iPad and its infinite applications, and a digital camcorder. When we discuss desert or arctic life, I would like to give them virtual experiences to grow their ability to apply what they learn.

My Project

With the donation of an iPad, my reluctant readers and emergent writers would be inspired to respond to animated texts and to research nonfiction topics such as dinosaurs. I would be able to use the iPad in conjunction with the ELMO projector to involve all students in classroom discussions, and I could have small groups work on projects together in centers structured around iPad applications. The digital camcorder could be used by both myself and students to record student progress and document events throughout the school year to post on the class homepage.

While my students have a Computer cluster, they have demonstrated a persistent need to utilize technology to add to their base-knowledge, and therefore require the resources to do so.

Once they become familiar with a program or site, they can carry over this knowledge at home or at the public library. Recording their progress will assist them to better-understand what is expected of them academically, and will help them to self-evaluate.
