iPad for Communicating Clearly and Confidently

My Project

As the speech therapist at my school, I work closely with students who have an IEP (Individualized Education Plan). Using an iPad in our speech room would be incredibly helpful for meeting my students' needs.

I work with many twice exceptional students.

While these students are classified as gifted, they have difficulties in understanding and using language. Many of my students are on the autism spectrum. They struggle with social skills and non-literal languages such as metaphors, similes, idioms, and inferencing. These skills are essential for them to succeed socially and academically. Using an iPad would allow us to watch videos for role-playing situations, use Boom Cards for figurative language practice, and have easy access to their classroom materials to target language skills in a functional way.

I also have students who stutter. Having an iPad would be incredibly helpful for using apps that facilitate smooth speech, such as loudness apps and rate of speech apps (i.e., metronomes and pacing boards), as well as for quick auditory feedback.

The last group of students I work with that would benefit from having an iPad is for my students with dyslexia and other reading-based difficulties. Using an iPad in our sessions would allow my students to benefit from virtual literacy supports such as the program "Read and Write." Apps such have literacy features including text-to-speech, speech-to-text, dyslexia friendly fonts, highlighting tools, voice notes, and vocabulary tools.

Overall, both my students and myself would be so appreciative of an iPad for our speech room. It would be consistently used and would help my students reach their goals both socially and academically. Thank you so much for your consideration!
