My Students
English Language Learners from diverse cultural backgrounds with a passion for learning are limited only by their mastery of the English language and the time it takes to master it. While this could describe all of the students in my school, it best describes the ESL population that I have the pleasure of working with.
Awesome learners doing amazing things!
My students are like most of the students within our school community with one major exception; they are all learning English, but their native language is Spanish.
Though it may sound simple, it is a very complex task to listen, speak, read, and write in a language that is new to you, especially when your family is limited in their ability to help you outside of school. Keep in mind, my students are doing this with the same expectations as the native English speaking students in their classes. Books, classwork, required testing, grades, report cards, recess, even lunch - in English. These awesome learners model perseverance daily as they seek academic growth and success!
My Project
My students have 30 minutes a day to learn and master a second language through listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities that support the academic content being taught in their classrooms! Meeting my students' language development needs requires strategically planned and meaningful lessons delivered in the most efficient ways. That's where the iPad comes in. Apple's iPad is the most user friendly way to utilize apps that reinforce and strengthen all four language domains.
iPads, along with specific apps that target listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities, are developing Language Pros!
Thoughtful planning, amazing apps, and an eagerness to learn simply aren't enough when you are limited by technology that does not support an app's features or doesn't allow students to engage with the app in the way it was designed. Using Apple's iPad allows my students to get the full experience when completing activities I have designed and created within these apps!
