This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a Bilingual/ESL educator, I get to teach my students every day not just how to read or write, but I also get to teach them about our culture. We explore content, but are able to blend our American and Latin cultures together in order to celebrate both.
I have 16 ESL students and 22 Bilingual students.
I teach Language Arts/Reading and Social Studies. My ESL students receive English LAR and my Bilingual Students receive Spanish SLAR and both groups get Social Studies in English. Both groups of students are always so eager to learn. Although our school does the best that it can, we do lack in some areas of technology.
My Project
The main use that these tablets will be used for are for a literacy work station. Because the technology is available in English and in Spanish, both of my classes will be able to use it. Students will be able to use this as a listening center to read, listen, and record themselves reading books that I will later be able to listen to with the Ras-Kids mobile app. That is the reason that I am purchasing the headphone with a microphone. This will ensure that other students working at other literacy stations aren't disturbed as well. There are also a variety of games and programs our school has access to such as Waterford that students can practice with. This will make it easy to change and give a variety of reading/writing skills for students to practice. Students can stay interested and not get bored. It is also more economical because I will not have to replace or print out new items. Since kids can be rough on materials I also want to include a case and protection plan for each tablet
Since most of these students are of low socioeconomic status, they don't have much experience using technology on a daily basis.
As a first generation American, I understand what it's like to be born into an immigrant family. I am vested in the program because of my personal experience as an English Language Learner and as a parent of Bilingual children.
