My Students

We are so excited our first classroom iPad has been funded! Now that it will soon be on its way to us, we need special applications from the iTunes Store to use with the iPad for my students with disabilities.

My early childhood special education students have been identified as having developmental delays.

Several of my students have also been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders, including Asperger's Syndrome. Their disabilities impact their ability to communicate with others and to develop social relationships. They attend a public elementary school and range in age from 2-6 years old. My students are so eager to learn and are excited about coming to school. I want to continue building on their enthusiasm for learning! Our Title One school is located in a high-poverty neighborhood, and 77.6% of our students are identified as economically disadvantaged. For some of our students, our school building is the only safe haven they know from the crime and domestic violence that takes place in the community. Their families struggle day to day to provide just the essentials like housing and food, and educational materials in the home are often considered a luxury.

My Project

A recent article in SF Weekly online highlighted the potential the iPad and apps have for students with autism and special needs. An Apple iPad with the right apps installed has the potential to facilitate communication with others and help unlock the curriculum for my preschoolers with special needs. Our iPad can be used as an alternative augmentative communication (AAC) device, but has many other functions unlike the expensive, single-function traditional and cumbersome AAC devices. With these applications installed, the iPad can facilitate communication, become a social story reader, improve hand-eye coordination, build vocabulary and academic skills though repetition and reinforcement, and teach social skills through shared turn-taking, or use of social stories apps.

Imagine non-verbal students communicating with others; imagine students who have trouble with routines and transitions using the visual schedule; imagine preschoolers learning new skills.

We are so excited about the potential we have for these apps, and thank you for supporting the communication and learning needs of our students!
