Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a variety of academic backgrounds. Approximately 70% of our entire school population are receiving free or reduced lunch. Most of our students, again about 70% are also second language students. The predominant language is Spanish. My students have many challenges in their lives.

Regardless of their circumstances, they enter my class every day with an eagerness to learn that I want to foster.

We begin each class reflecting on something happening globally in science. After discussing these issues it makes me want to bring more of that into my classroom.

My Project

My students need real world investigative experiences in science. Due to the drought conditions in California and issues worldwide where there are many areas in the world that don't have enough potable water, we will investigate water quality and how water can be treated to become drinkable. My students will perform two sets of investigations.

Initially we will analyze the properties of water.

Students will incorporate existing classroom probes with the iPad technology. Using software that is compatible with the probes and iPad students will explore the properties of different bottled water and tap water. They will test for a variety of properties including salinity, dissolved oxygen levels, and CO2 levels will be used. This probeware will connect to the iPad with its protective cover and allow the students to move from test area to test area with the iPad. The results are recorded in real time and the students can see the results immediately.

The next activity will be to perform the same tests on polluted water created in the lab. The challenge will be "How can we make this water drinkable?" The students will be challenged to create a filtration system. Students will have to design a filtration system using the sedimentator tubes and materials they think will be beneficial to their filtration apparatus. We will be opening the sedimentator tubes at both ends to allow the water to flow through. Following filtration of their polluted water they will test the water again using all of the same probes and iPad to see if they created potable water.

I think my students will be amazed at the results!
