Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are young mathematicians and scientists in training. My goal is to prepare my students to become proficient in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). They are also building their foundation to become fluent readers.
My first graders are motivated and diligent students.
This year, my class is comprised of students who need more support in their academics. A quarter of my class has an IEP and need individualized attention to meet their academic needs. Our school is a Math and Science Magnet school with a diverse population that reflects Los Angeles County. My students come with a keen interest in math and science. Our school's goal is to prepare every child to be college and career ready, especially in the areas of STEM.
My Project
Our school has recently been equipped with wireless Internet. Most of our assessments and progress monitoring is now required to be done online. I would use the iPad to assess my students' reading level and also to progress monitor my students' reading progress throughout the year. The books I am requesting are titles that have been recognized as must read books for young, emerging readers. I would use the books to ignite a love for reading, as well as for our Interactive Read Aloud time. I will also use the sheet protectors to make fluency folders so each child can build their automaticity as readers.
I know my students will greatly benefit from the use of the iPad.
I will be able to assess each child and meet the needs of each child. Knowing a student's reading level allows me to customize small group instruction for each child. My students love being read to, and the books will introduce my students to the world of reading and learning. The sheet protectors will allow me to make fluency folders so that the students can practice their reading skills.
