IoT pH Monitoring for Aquaculture Lab

Help me give my students pH sensors and complimentary electronics to help monitor and automate their aquaculture tanks.

My Students

The students involved in this project are a diverse group of learners looking to establish a classroom environment that promotes creativity and problem solving. We are a group that emphasizes a learning by doing approach that breaks free of the traditional assessment-based evaluation of student performance.

Our students are researching the future of food production through experiments with vertical hydroponics and aquaculture.

They are automating and analyzing gardens using CAD, electronics, engineering and coding. These are really impressive young scientists.

My Project

This is the third phase of our budding aquaculture lab. Students are studying various fresh-water fish species to understand the best compliment for our aquaponics systems. They are now looking at designing a smart monitoring interface that will alert them to changes in system variables within the aquaculture tanks. We are starting with temperature and pH.

Student engineers will be designing the electronics, code, and CAD enclosures for a pH monitoring/adjustment interface to be embedded within their aquaculture systems.

This will involve feeding data from the Arduino-based sensors to an IoT platform via a connected Raspberry Pi. Our design team is focusing on long-term data visualization and analysis along with the ability to be alerted when conditions within the tanks exit equilibrium. The ultimate goal is to have the tanks adjust their own pH based on student-written algorithms.
