My Students
"Tell me, I forget. Show me, I remember. Involve me, I understand." Chinese proverb. When a student participates in the learning process itself, learning is constructed by the learner's interpretation of their own experiences. Learning is an active process when hands-on activities are provided.
The students in our classroom come from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds.
Our school is an inclusive setting that teaches students with disabilities in the same classrooms with students who are typically developing. The students love learning together and need the opportunity to share skills. The students are a diverse learning community that works together. Inclusive education means that children who reflect the demographics of the surrounding region—including children who develop typically, children with special needs and children who are gifted—learn side by side. My school's model allows for the individual needs of each child to be addressed in a manner that enhances each child’s strengths while also addressing learning needs. My students have so many great ideas and work samples they want to share with their peers. They are excited and inspired to achieve their potential when they can teach through their work.
My Project
Incorporating a document camera into my daily lessons will allow students to follow along with materials at their desks while I model for them. Each student can use manipulative's and other hands-on materials while they practice what I am modeling for them. Then they can instantly share their work since it can be projected onto a large white board. This will do away with the need for an overhead projector and provides real time opportunities for learning. A document camera will allow students to work collaboratively and view other perspectives and approaches to problems. I will also be able to project pages in books and have the students experience concepts of print and important reading strategies such as appropriate pacing, print tracking and intonation. The books will come to life as the student can also model reading for each other. The document camera will be projected using our new classroom projector which was funded through Donors Choose! I will be able to provide more engaging learning experiences for my students by using a document camera. The students will have access to universally designed lessons that will help them to access the curriculum. The technology will enhance the lessons and make the materials more engaging.
