"Help!" Investigative Journalists can't write with splintered stumps while poking holes through slipping and sliding papers! Greetings, my name is Sarah Milianta-Laffin and I teach 3rd grade in Houston, TX. I am a Teach for America Corp Member serving at a Title I school in Alief Independent School District.

I couldn't wait to meet my new students this year. I waited anxiously at the door for them to enter my room, and one-by-one they did. After 10 students had arrived, I noticed they all were missing something that typically accompanies students to school: backpacks. No backpacks, meant no supplies. I sent home a letter and patiently waited for supplies to arrive. It's November and I'm still waiting for the supply fairy to bring my students the items they need to support their learning. I ended up buying most of the notebooks and folders myself. I also bought pencils, but I bought cheap pencils. These pencils have almost been more frustrating than helpful. When you sharpen them, the lead often breaks off numerous times and in doing so, jams the sharpener. The pencils also regularly split up the side when you sharpen them, and they cannot erase without leaving unsightly black and red streaks.

Also, this year I have struggled with getting students engaged with reading and writing about non-fiction. Two-weeks ago, I made a breakthrough. My students are creating weekly "news reports" by being investigative journalists! They are so excited about collaborating with other students. Part of "selling" this program to my students involved telling them that all journalists need clipboards to take notes. I fashioned clipboards out of cardboard and paperclips but they did not hold up well. The clips fell off and the students poked holes through their papers. Here's what I need to help keep my kids excited about non-fiction. I need a class set of clipboards that will not only serve this project, but also facilitate note-taking in other subjects and the ability to teach lessons outside of the classroom. I also need heavy-duty, reliable pencils that will last my students throughout the rest of the year.

Finally, as I mentioned, the supply fairy never dropped off school materials in my classroom this year. You have the opportunity to be our supply fairy, and just in time for the holidays! Your support will help keep my students excited about learning about non-fiction, and also allow my students to complete school work for the rest of the year. Thank you for your time.
