My Students
I teach at a small neighborhood school on Chicago's west side. Nearly half of our students are English language learners and seventy-seven percent of our students are low income.
This year I have 29 wonderful third graders who are learning from home.
Making the transition from second to third grade is always an adjustment and this year is no exception. They have accepted the challenges that online learning has brought and are excelling more and more each day!
My Project
After a year of virtual and hybrid learning my students and I are ready and excited to be back in school. One of the biggest challenges we might face is reengaging in learning after last school year. My first solution to this challenge is hands-on science investigations.
One thing we've learned this past year is that we need scientists.
Students will start the year off with a weather and climate unit. Through out this unit we will discover how we can predict weather, why some places are always hot or cold and how humans contribute to sever weather. We will end our unit with a stem project where students will have to work collaboratively to design a new shelter that can withstand extreme winds and precipitation levels. These materials will help students not only understand the science concepts, but will help them make connections to real world scientific problems that are affecting their world.
