My Project
Most students have never given a thought to the "stuff" they walk on outside, yet soil is key to all life forms! In this environmental science class, students will get to experience some of the wonders of soil through the materials I am asking for in this project. Knowing my middle schoolers, no one will want to dive in and really investigate unless they have gloves to wear. Plus, gloves are a great way to make sure all students stay safe. So, gloves are a key ingredient to our investigations. Tweezers to look through the soil and pick out small objects and organisms to look at under the microscope will allow them to see a world they've never even noticed before. The microscope slides will allow us to discover this unseen world! The Berlese Apparatus is a device used to collect a wider variety and greater number of organisms that are found in soil. Having one of these devices per group would be fantastic so that each group can carry out the investigation, and then swap with other groups to see what they have found. The jars with lids can be used in an investigation where students can shake the soil sample with water to figure out the different materials, like sand, silt, and clay.
With the needed supplies to do these hands-on activities with soil, students will be introduced to an amazing new world that they typically just take for granted.
We will go on to study problems with erosion and soil contamination around the world. We will also be comparing soils from different biomes around the world. When we are all finished, students will never look at soil the same!
