Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Bright, motivated, enthusiastic, eclectic, resilient, tenacious, humble, compassionate... these are just a few words that describe my students, a Title I charter school. Nestled in between a railroad track and the metro rail my students bloom like the lotus flower out of mud as it is not where you are from that makes you who you are. Their resilience and drive motivates and inspires me to continue to push them to new limits, to strive for resources so that they may have a chance at achieving their dreams.
My Project
With our quickly changing landscape students must ask new questions and use new technologies to address global issues. Students will use the equipment requested in several research projects. First they will test the nutrition of plants grown in different conditions by extracting and measuring phenolic compounds. By measuring light absorption at a particular wavelength students may calculate phenolic compound concentration and determine if growing conditions result in more nutritious foods. As we face the sixth students will also look at methods of propagating local plants whose population may be diminishing in order to replenish these natural populations in an urban setting.
