Investigating Plant Nutrition

My students need two plant nutrition kits, three Hanna Checker pH meters and one Carolina pH Meter Calibration and Maintenance Set to explore topics in plant nutrition.

My Students

Students will conduct experiments to help them understand how proper nutrition allows plants to grow well and look healthy. These experiments will look at how leaving one of the major or minor elements out of the plants nutrient will impacts its growth.

The students in my class come from an inner city environment.

Many of them do not understand how plants need proper nutrition just like they do. The most important thing for many of these students is making science fun and interesting. The activities I am asking for will give the students an inquiry-based science education into plant nutrition.

My Project

The 2 Plant Nutrition Kits will allow students to conduct various experiments exploring different areas of plant nutrition. Students will have to design experiments using hydroponics techniques to test the impact of pH, major and minor nutrients impact plant health. The 3 pH meters and pH Maintenance Set will also be used during the experiments. The series of experiments students will have to conduct will help stress the importance of experimental design, data collection and analysis of the results. These are all very important skills for students to learn and their doing it a fun hands-on, inquiry based science lesson.

Having students learn how to design and conduct experiments is the best way for students to learn science concepts.

Hands-on science is the best way for students to learn and retain the information learned. The series of experiments students will have to conduct using the plant nutrition kits will provide them with the materials to design and conduct these experiments.
