Investigating Math Through Technology

My students need dry erase white boards, some graphing calculators, batteries for the calculators, a printer and ink cartridges for their assignments.

My Students

Every day we start the class with the question: are we ready for Calculus? Yes we are! Show us more differentiation! My students work hard graphing the functions, finding the maximum and minimum points by differentiating the equation and by table of the value, and finding areas under curves.

We are an inner city magnet school with focus on math and science.

We have very motivated students who face many economic challenges. For example, many of our students work after school to help support their families. Some have to take care of their younger siblings or elders in their family. Despite all the economic challenges my students face at home, they still come to school everyday and they work hard. We have a 97-100% graduation rate. Most of our students will be going to college after they graduate from high school.

My Project

Graphing calculators and a printer will benefit my students in many ways. My students can use graphing calculators to investigate math by looking at a table of values and graph in order to see relationships and properties of functions. They can also use the graphing calculator to examine, calculate, and solve trigonometric functions. As for the printer, my students can use it to print out their assignments, projects, and college applications. Because most of my students cannot afford a printer, they frequently ask me to print, or scan, their project or college applications. Since there is no printer in my classroom, when this happens we have to look all over the school just to find one printer that work. By having graphing calculators and a printer for my students to use, they can maximize their learning time.

Donations will help improve my classroom in many ways.

My students can sign out the calculators to take home for their homework. They can access the printer for their college application process and assignments. I can also improve the use of my teaching time by using the TI-84 smart-view to show the graph or table on the smart board. The smart-view can also be used to teach my students how to use the graphing calculator for more a concrete understanding in Pre Calculus and Calculus.
