My Students

Many students today do not get the chance to grow plants and observe their life cycle. Students are required to learn the life cycle and structure of plants as part of the life science curriculum. What better way to learn all about plants than to grow them.

The students I teach live in the inner city.

Majority of them rarely get a chance to grow plants for fun or to help to provide food for their families. They also do not get a chance to really observe the differences in structures of plants that they see walking to school every day. Bringing these types of activities will help students understand the basic needs of plants so they might be able to grow their own food someday. They will also learn the basic structure of plants while they grow them.

My Project

Hand-on activities are the most important part of science. This project will not only provide the students a chance at a hands-on experiment it will also require them to grow and learn the structure of plants. The students will have to provide the proper nutrients for the plants to grow properly using hydroponics. Students will have to measure the pH of the water to make sure the plants can utilize the nutrients provided in the water. They will look at the benefits of having the fish waste fertilize the plants using an aquaponics system.

Having students learn and understand the structure and a nutritional need of plants is an important concept in science.

Teaching students how to grow plants could have a very positive impact on many of the students. They will be able to grow their own plants for fun or as a food source. Having more genetically modified foods produced that we do not really understand the potential negative impact of these foods on us it will become more important to be able to grow are own food.
