Investigating Global Warming

My students need Daphnia culture kits, Wolfe Stereo Microscopes and other living organisms to investigate the physiology and structure of these living animals.

My Students

Getting students engaged in science is very challenging without the proper equipment and supplies. Having hands-on activities for students to examine the structure and function of various animals will help engage the students in the science curriculum.

The students in my class come from diverse backgrounds.

They attend an inner city school which like most schools lack the funds to provide them the materials for a good science curriculum. Students in the class learn the most about science when they can touch and examine the materials up close. They really enjoy working in a lab and acting like real scientists.

My Project

The materials provided will allow students to examine the structure of various living animals. This will help students appreciate the living world around them that many of them have never seen. Once students have studied the animals they will examine how global warming impacts animals living in aquatic habitats. Students will count the number of heart beats of Daphnia at different water temperatures to see how temperature impacts the heart rate. This will allow students to see the impact of rising global temperatures and hopefully make good decisions about the environment when they become adults.

If we are to protect the environment, we need to educate our students about the impact human’s make on the environment.

Using inquiry-based science activities will help students not only understand these important topics but also have a better chance of remembering the information. Students will also enjoy science which will help fostering the possibility that they will become interested in protecting the environment and possibly a career in science.
