My students need 4 hermit crab habitats to complete an investigation on their eating habits for a long term science investigation.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Glover's classroom raised $316

My Students
My students love observing the behaviors of living organisms, from microscopic life to animals on nature programs. With limited access to living organisms in the classroom, my students are not able to complete humane controlled investigations using live organisms.
My students come from economically disadvantaged homes in an urban setting in New York.
Many of my students (approximately 45% of our school population) have special learning needs. Through all of this, they are upbeat and try their best to grow academically and emotionally.
Our school is a new school, only three years old. We do not have the resources of larger schools, but we do have the passion for science. My students really enjoy our science class. They are extremely excited any time we have an opportunity to explore the many different kingdoms of life. Our class curriculum this year revolves around the exploration of our living environment.
My Project
My students will use the hermit crab habitats to complete a controlled scientific investigation. This investigation will involve studying the food preferences of hermit crabs. Hermit crabs are an organism that will be extremely engaging for my students. This engagement will ensure that the students have the stamina to complete their long-term science investigation. For many students, this is their first long-term investigation.
By completing this investigation, the students will master the skills of generating a hypothesis, identifying variables, collecting data, and making graphs which also use skills form their math class. Writing their scientific explanation will incorporate writing skills from their English class. Students will also give presentations of their projects.
The top performing project will be taken to a Science Expo that takes place at the American Museum of Natural History.
The donation of these materials will not only help to engage students in a long-term, controlled science investigation, but they will also be usable in future school years.
Stewardship of living organisms can also be used for teaching responsibility and helps many troubled students find a positive link to their school environment when assigned the role of animal caretaker.
