This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I don't know how many times a student's learning has been disrupted by a problem related to tooth decay or indigestion. Too many times to count. I have students who eat fast food and drink soda for nearly every meal.

The connection between urban poverty and health conditions related to poor diet is something I deal with every day. As an English teacher, I have an opportunity to not only help students develop stronger reading and writing skills, but I also can expose them to new ideas and information based on the texts I choose for them to read.

In my Junior English classes, we have a non-fiction unit. We read and analyze persuasive texts on controversial issues, then write a persuasive essay. I would like to revise this unit to focus on the issues of fast food and nutrition, the meat-packing industry, and marketing directed at young people. Eric Schlosser's book "Chew on This," is the companion text to his book "Fast Food Nation." It is written with a teen audience in mind and addresses the fast food industry from a perspective that engages young readers. This text is of a lower lexile level than "Fast Food Nation" and serves as an attention-grabber for my unit, scaffolding knowledge as students move toward the more challenging reading of "Fast Food Nation." The other texts requested are essay collections that will also be used to teach the college preparatory standards required by my school. We will cover identifying the main ideas, summarizing and paraphrasing, identifying the author's stand, distinguishing between supporting and opposing viewpoints, identifying facts and opinions, and analyzing text structure. The essay collections are also key sources for students' persuasive essays at the culmination of the non-fiction unit.

Your help in purchasing these books will give my students a new perspective on their own health. You will also give them access to sophisticated, college preparatory books that will help them become more critical readers and thinkers.
