This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the first time you conducted your first lab experiment? Reading a science textbook about environmental issues, while helpful and informative, can't compare to actually obtaining soil and water samples and testing them.
My students love science and look forward to labs and inquiry based projects.
They have often expressed that science is their favorite class because they can make real world connections and explore science through hands on activities. They often stop in during nutrition, lunch, and Saturday to work on labs not because they have to, but because they want to.
My Project
This year, all sixth grade students have focused on the water crisis in California and how that effects humanity as a whole. As part of the year long thematic unit, which includes science, history, science and math, students will investigate the environmental factors that have contributed to the California drought. These soil and dissolved oxygen kits, and microbial mixtures materials will also enable students to see the human impact on ecosystems and the environment.
They must acquire the necessary tools to ensure their success in High School and beyond.
It is important that they are exposed to as many meaningful learning opportunities as possible. The soil and water testing kits would provide students with the tools and experiences that might lead them to a career in the field of science.
