My students need nutrient agar plates and sterile swabs.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Kawasmi's classroom raised $296
This project is fully funded
I teach 6th grade science in a rural North Carolina public school. In 6th grade, students study ecology. We discuss the different roles of living organisms in our environment.
Students need to learn about the ecological role of bacteria, and about the presence of bacteria in their day-to-day lives. A great activity for this is to have the students swab different surfaces they contact every day (such as desks, door knobs, computer keyboards, etc.) and culture the bacteria on nutrient agar plates. This helps students learn that bacteria is EVERYWHERE, that not all bacteria is bad, and gives them the opportunity to identify different types of bacteria. It is also a great way to introduce lab skills that will be necessary in higher level science classes.
I am asking for sterile swabs to collect the bacteria from various surfaces and prepared nutrient agar plates which are necessary for growing the bacteria in a controlled, safe way.
Thank you for your consideration of this proposal.
