Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"An investment in knowledge pays the best interest."- Benjamin Franklin. I would like my students to posses 21st century skills that will enable to compete in the global economy. My students lack the ability to fully understand the value of a dollar and the importance of investing in their future.

My 5th grade students live in a high poverty area where opportunities come few, far and in between.

Despite all the challenges they face; homelessness, language barriers, learning disability, my students come to school eager and hungry for knowledge. With the limited resources we have I attempt to have our students prepared to meet Common Core State Standards. My students constantly engage in group projects in which they share ideas, think critically and construct arguments based on their findings. They enjoy sharing their new found knowledge with their peers. We all work cooperatively to build our knowledge.

My Project

Having mobile technology (laptop) in our classroom will enable my students to have more access to knowledge instantaneously with a click of a button. I want to build financial literacy for my students so that fully understand the value of a dollar and how far it can take them. I want my 5th grade students to begin thinking about the cost of their college education. How will they will they pay for college? I want them to explore the various options that are available. Students will work in small groups and research the cost of various colleges ranging from Community Colleges, State Universities to Ivy league Universities. Empowering my students to become financially literate will in turn help them plan for the biggest investment of their lives, their education.

Having a laptop in our classroom will give my students the flexibility to work anywhere in the classroom in their small groups.

It will also help help our future innovators (my students) obtain as much knowledge as possible with the click of a button. Not only will my students be able to use the lap top for research but, they will be able to use it to type their reports, create power points for their presentations and prepare for state testing by sharpening their technological skills.
