Invention Convention Revival

Help me give my students the recognition they deserve with award ribbons after competing in our Invention Convention, the help they may need with display boards, and an invention book to find inspiration.

My Students

My students are the best in the world! We live in a very small, rural town in mid-west Indiana. Over 60% of our students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches. Our state standards changed last year, and I find myself lacking durable items to teach these standards.

My school doesn't have much money for up-to-date equipment, so I write grants to purchase items to help my students work with a variety of tools to which they would not otherwise have access.

I teach all levels of students and believe each and every one should have the same experiences! All of them are eager to learn by understanding that all subjects must be integrated to have a complete learning experience. I have convinced each and every one that they can win a Nobel Prize for thinking outside the box. It is my job to give them the tools to think critically in every situation.

My Project

Invention Conventions teach students problem-identification, problem-solving, creativity, and communication skills. TV shows like Shark Tank and The Profit have renewed interest in creating products designed to solve everyday programs.

It is time to revive the Crawfordsville Middle School Invention Convention that was hosted throughout the 1990s and 2000s!

The teachers who coordinated our Convention retired over a decade ago, and the event was forgotten. Serendipitously, I had a conversation with former students who reminded me of the fun they had, while learning how to create. They remembered exactly what they had created, and one even still had her invention. It is time to bring back an event that showcases our students' creativity.

All products will be used to assist and reward students. The ribbons will be given to those students judged to be first, second, or third place. All participants will be given a participation certificate. We will use a local vendor for trophies for overall winners. Wabash College students will judge the projects. Some students will need financial assistance with display boards, so I have requested a small amount. And some will need some inspiration, so I will share the Inventions book by Smithsonian Institute to help them.
