My Students

My students are very special. We are in a Title I community where resources are slim, but curiosity is high! I teach gifted students grade 3 through 5. They are a very hands-on, minds-on group of students. They love to build, make, and create with materials that I have available currently. Being able to meet their critical thinking needs, along with teaching them to think creatively is a win-win for my students!

The expert in anything was once a beginner.

Being able to think through problems to come up with applicable solutions is a lost art. By supplying them with the tools needed, the students are able to apply different strategies to understand the inner workings of different topics. The students own their learning and are able to teach others based on their trial and error process.

The culture is a very diverse population with a growing Hispanic population. Resources outside of school are slim and I feel it is my responsibility to feed their passion to learn while they are with me at school.

My Project

The goal of Invent to Learn: Makerspace Science is to get my third through fifth grade students making, tinkering, and engineering science projects in our gifted classroom. You may be asking what a Makerspace is? It is a basically a place for people to make things that are substantial, shareable, and personally meaningful to them. The goal of my project is to have students explore science concepts through the process of actually working to make something. The Lego base plates are going to be used to create a Lego wall to create the unimaginable! When they build they will have to see things in a different perspective to post to a wall as opposed to building up from the ground. I want them to create theories, use trial and error, and make creations. There is no better way to learn than to do.

There is a lot of research supporting the concept of “project-based learning”.

This concept means creating projects that are substantial, shareable, and personally meaningful for the student. Makerspaces allow young learners to get in there, to “play” and learn, to create and test theories, and then have a finished product. The students will use the Lil Bits Electronic Gizmos to test theories and learn to be risk takers in their learning. In my classroom, they are free of judgment and allowed to try new things and take risks without being laughed at for their ideas. The combination of tools and supplies will allow my students to “get their hands dirty” and to actually learn while creating. Students will reinforce science skills while having fun learning and creating. The students will use the K'NEX Robotics to code their creations' movements. They will go through the engineering design process to test ideas through coding their creations.
