Introducing STEM to Kindergarten!

My students need STEM materials, including magnetic blocks to practice engineering, games to learn coding, and a library of STEM titles to ignite their creativity, in order to create the foundation of 21st Century skills.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kindergarteners are full of wonder, excitement, and energy! Which makes my job like that of a circus ringmaster. The school population consists of 83% of students who are eligible for free lunch. Nearly 2/3 of our students are also characterized as English learners. Which makes it that much more challenging to teach them all to read by the end of the school year.

The "friends" in my class are all motivated to learn; however, many of them do not have access to learning resources at home.

Despite the fact that we're located in Santa Cruz, an idyllic oceanfront location, our community is an urban pocket where many families are doubled up in their housing situation, parents work multiple jobs, and the cost of living is skyrocketing. Yet, my "friends" are resilient and have big dreams for their future. I receive just $200 for my classroom budget for the year and as a new teacher, I'm still developing my "toolkit" of materials and resources to help my "friends" learn to the best of their abilities.

My Project

My "friends" have limited exposure to the STEM fields outside of our classroom. The magnetic tiles will allow them to explore engineering principles in a fun, hands-on manner. The coding games will be able to serve as a differentiated center to encourage independent and collaborative problem-solving. Finally, the STEM library will support their conceptual understanding of STEM, encourage literacy, and inspire their creativity.

These engaging STEM materials are necessary to promote and support critical thinking in my students.

The 21st Century Skills have been described as the "Four C's:" collaboration, coordination, creativity, and critical thinking. This project addresses all four of these and will serve as a great start for my kindergartners.
