Introducing Inner-City Students to People Around the World
Help me give my students The world! I want to introduce my students to others who are both the same and very different. They would love to learn about famous people and everyday people!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I love this bunch of eager students! They are excited about learning and generally happy to come to school every day. They are helpful and kind and quick to pick up new skills and ideas. I have a few who have a lot of extra energy and can find it difficult to stay in one place long enough to hear new information or to demonstrate the things they've learned. I know simply from conversing with these students that they are excited to learn and to show their skills, but I know from observation that they struggle to contain their bodies while their brains are working. They wiggle and move all day sometimes. I know their curiosity is huge and they want to know everything about everything.
My Project
I have always loved Scholastic News but my school does not have the funding for it. I've used the magazine as a student, and I have used it with students when I was a volunteer in various classrooms. There are so many uses for these magazines! I especially like that one specific thing my administration wants students to learn - text evidence - is something these magazines help teach in every issue. Another favorite feature is the map skills, which we would then use the Map Skills workbook to emphasize and strengthen. Finally, the biographies are an extra activity for my advanced students. They are learning how to identify important concepts in biographies and I would love to get some students who could work together in a small group and create a project based on what they learned from a new biography.
