My Students

“If they can't learn the way we teach, we teach the way they learn” - Lovaas This serves as a constant reminder to me that as I continue to provide specially designed instruction to my students they will succeed in their academic programs.

I work with students in K/1/2/3 who are bright, funny, hard-working and like school!

Our program serves students who are identified as having moderate to severe disabilities; some students are non-verbal, some have physical or cognitive disabilities, and receive academic and social/emotional supports. My goal is to provide a program for our students that is aligned to our general education curriculum with modifications for individual students based on their needs. We are in the Blended Program - we have a 1st Grade General Education classroom that serves as our Blended Partner where we can spend time daily in academics, social, PE/Music/Library, special projects, and just having fun on the playground and at lunch together. Our school is a Title 1 school with a high ELL rate and free-reduced lunch rate. Our community is very diverse and represents over 30 languages and many countries. Our families are very involved and give much of their time and talents to the school.

My Project

It is challenging for me to modify the grade level curriculum without additional supports. I need to align our work with the students' grade level and provide specially designed instruction, however, modifications must be made to ensure all students are learning at their own level. During math some students work individually with staff and some work in a small group. Students may need assistance physically and others with communication. Most of the students are also learning to write. My staff and I can work with our students on materials in the Common Core Math Standards Learning Center daily. The Learning Center has great manipulatives and lessons that our students can utilize and practice daily to reinforce their math skills. The Learning Center is organized so we can "grab and go" and allow our students to have hands-on practice. Some of the students will also be able to work more independently which is a critical piece of our program as well!

Every student in my classroom is a learner, it is my job to present the materials in a way that is best for them as individuals.

It is important that our students receive access to CCSS Math materials as their peers are, but more important that every student receive specially designed instruction to meet their individual needs. Our students are bright and capable, and given these tools I see them using their skills and enjoying their math programs while integrating CCSS into our program.
