Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every Wednesday in our English Language Arts Class, we study either an inspirational human being in history, an historic event, or a current world news event that we have come to call, "Worldly Wednesday." We read informational text articles, view news clips and biographies, participate in discussions, and write reflections that connect us to the world. We have created a collaborative community of critical thinkers and creative learners by immersing ourselves in literature and learning that is meaningful and connected to our lives. We value diversity, embrace change and discovery, and are consistently in pursuit of knowledge that will enhance our comprehension and critical thinking skills and connect us with the world. We believe through education, we can "be the change we want to see in the world."
My students come from diverse backgrounds and have been through all walks of life, yet no matter how difficult their circumstances, they choose to come to school, be educated, and make a difference in the world.
My Project
By having a yearly subscription to the Scholastic Scope Language Arts Magazine, not only will my students EACH receive a physical copy to read, dissect, and make meaningful connections in the classroom with through collaboration and discussion, but we can make connections through Google Classroom Integration as well. The subscription also provides online materials and resources to give students a background on particular articles and work on vocabulary within a text. We can compare and contrast texts within the magazine and use articles to enhance our novel studies as well.
Familiarizing our students with articles that connect them with a world beyond their classroom; a world in which they can learn they are able to make a difference in by using their voices in a positive, powerful way, taking a stand for issues they believe in, will vibrantly enhance their learning and interest in reading.
The ability to read is a gift. Having access to such a publication as Scholastic Scope will help my students invest in their future and strengthen their critical thinking skills while honing their reading skills all at the same time. An awareness of cultural issues and diversity in our world is essential in helping our students become mindful, compassionate beings that can ignite a positive change.
