Into the World of Special Education

Help me give my students flexible seating options to help them have the choice and freedom to work around the room during independent work time, small group intervention times or to help regulate themselves during breaks.

My Project

Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and allows them to work freely in a space that will work best for them. As a special education teacher, many of my students benefit from different types of seating for their learning.

During small group interventions as well as independent work time I allow my students to work in a space that they know they can be successful in such as at the table, on the floor with a clipboard, laying down on a yoga mat, or using a different type of chair such as a wobble seat or cushioned soft circle chair.

I plan to use these materials to allow MORE of my students the chance to have different options that will best suit them and their needs with their learning. The cushions will allow students to sit on the floor at a low rise table but still provide comfort or the ability to move them around the room and use a clipboard. The wobble chairs will allow the students that need a little extra movement while they work the ability to do so without causing distractions, and the two pack of pillow chairs will give students a comfortable spot to rest their body durings breaks to help self-regulate themselves to help them get back to their classroom or small group to learn.

My students have shown that with the option of flexible seating in their day help them to focus on their assignments or learning, while allowing them to be comfortable and giving them a say in their own education.
