This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I've never seen so many stars!" “This is my first campfire!” "Can we live here?" These were just some of the sentiments of my students, given the opportunity to go camping, explore nature and experience life away from the noise and chaos of New York City!

My school serves grades 6-12 and is part of the Early College Initiative, which aims to make inner-city students "college ready." We achieve this by providing our students with rigorous curricula, advanced classes, and the opportunity to take college courses in High School as early as the 9th grade.

The students have opened their hearts and minds to learning and discovering about the world and themselves in science class. All of our 8th graders take an advanced biology course that is usually taken by 9th graders and have excelled in this class. Their success is a product of their hard work, commitment and a unique, educational camping trip! While a new crop of 8th graders are looking forward to this trip, we recently received the news that we do not have the money to go.

My Project

Each year, our camping trip has exceeded the expectations of students and teachers! The kids fall in love with the stars in the night sky, the fresh air, and truly connect with the natural world. They are able to learn first-hand about concepts that could only otherwise be taught through a textbook. On last year's trip, the students found evidence of ecological succession in the forest, analyzed complex food webs, and learned about waste and conservation by calculating and monitoring their own consumption and waste. All of the lessons were standards aligned and covered topics the students needed for their state exam in June. The science activities and character building exercises challenged the kids to be leaders and helped them grow by pushing them out of their comfort zones. Not only is it a wonderful academic experience, it is also a true bonding experience for the kids and their classmates!

Our students are beating the odds and turning the statistics of the education gap upside down by proving that inner-city kids CAN excel in rigorous classes and CAN go to college.

The camping trip will benefit these students so much, academically and personally, and is an experience most kids may never get the opportunity to have. With your help, we can bring a meaningful, life-changing, educational experience to a group of deserving children.
