“Writing is an exploration. You start from nothing and learn as you go.”~E. L. Doctorow Blogs allow teachers to expand writing time by extending beyond the classroom environment and traditional school schedule constraints. They can be about any topic and allow all students to feel like real writers!

Writing is a life skill that no student, no citizen, can do without.

After teaching for five years, I observe that many of my students in the fourth grade don't see themselves as writers, especially the boys. They have preconceived negative beliefs of their abilities and are apprehensive about picking up a pencil. Of course there is a range of ability and attitudes in any group of students, but the boys continued to stand out with their “do-we-really-have-to-do-this” attitude. Where did this attitude come from and how could I reach out to my students to show them that they were talented writers with so much to share with our world?

My Project

My students need three HP Netbooks to be able to access the Internet and add entries to our classroom blog. Educators know that students write better when they have a real audience -- not just a teacher with a red pen. In the past, finding such an audience was a challenge. But with Internet access and some basic software, any student can write for the world to see. Although blogging in schools is still in its infancy, anecdotal evidence suggests that students' interest in, and quantity of, writing increases when their work is published online and -- perhaps even more importantly -- when it is subject to reader comments. My students need three HP netbooks to be able to access the internet to write entries on our classroom blog, "The 49er Times".

Thanks to the "Chevron Classroom Challenge", my students will have the opportunity to share their writing with the world and view themselves as writers.

I'm excited about the this new 21st mode of teaching and hope to gain confidence in my 4th grade students.
