My classroom has 22 wonderfully diverse students who come to school each day eager to learn. Some students find it difficult to stay engaged. They fidget and unable to focus. Imagine not being able to understand the material presented because it is too difficult. What if you are daydreaming in class because the material is too easy. Intervention and Enricment are so important in meeting out student's diverse needs.
Our school is a Title I school with the majority of the students qualifying for free lunches due to high poverty levels.
Many parents work more than one job and do not have the means, the language knowledge, or the educational ability to support students' learning at home. Our school is filled with caring educators that nurture all of these beautiful children in ways that extend beyond the classroom. Providing a meal, personal grooming products, clothing, and other student needs to keep our families healthy is a common occurrence. Educational support is also provided by our caring teaching staff - we send books home with children, tutor children during our off hours, we have even provided babysitting of siblings in order to allow our parents to receive needed support and counseling.
My Project
Imagine that you are a student in a class of 22 and you are either confused about the material being presented or find it difficult to stay engaged because you already have mastered and are proficient in the material being presented. All of my students are capable of high levels of learning and have the ability to be academically successful, but they do not all learn in the same way, at the same time. In order to successfully maximize each child's learning potential in my classroom, it is important to introduce these students that do not fit in the "on grade level" group, collaborative and innovative ways to learn, in their own way, and at their own pace. The iPad minis will enable technology to take these children into a learning environment that caters to their individual needs. Technology is something special to my students as many do not have any technology available in their homes.
The very large majority of my students have never seen an iPad, much less gotten the opportunity to use one.
Many of my intervention students are ESL students and the iPads will extend beyond the language barrier to assist in their learning. My enrichment students will soar with the unlimited opportunities available through the technological resources available on the iPads. I can't help but smile when I think about the joy on their faces as they use and learn on these two iPad minis.
