My Students
This year I get the honor of creating and teaching a High School course in Queer History. This course is the first of its kind for my district, and we need resources to make it work. This project will improve our school's collection of queer-focused academic resources.
The 1,700 students at our school represent a variety of backgrounds (ethnic, religious, citizenship, economic, etc), united to provide a supportive environment for students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, genderqueer, and even CIS-Gendered.
Thanks to its amazing students, our school is often highly ranked (locally, statewide, and even nationwide) in terms of achievement in academics, sports, and extracurricular activities. These students are inspiring, and they definitely have great plans to make our future world a better one.
My Project
One of the topics my students have found most fascinating is the relationship between race and sexual identity. Queer people of color often find themselves outcasts of both communities, and their stories shed light on the penetrative power of institutional oppression. The books in this project will help my students explore how society and individuals react when faced with a minority within a minority.
Now more than ever, American students need to be exposed to stories of Queer Lives and the lives of People of Color.
A book like "Red Lipstick" will provide students with a first-hand account of how different classes of men treat the Asian Hijra population. While "Lost Prophet: The Life and Times of Bayard Rustin" will educate students on how even a man as loving as Dr. Martin Luther King, had to ask his right-hand man to keep his homosexuality a secret. Students will use these books to become informed citizens who are ready to fight against social injustice.
