International Sports & Recreation

My students need international sports equipment (lacrosse balls and sticks and a cricket kit) to learn about sports and recreation in other countries.

My Students

Sports such as basketball, baseball, and American football are in iconic American pasttime, but in other countries and cultures, these sports are secondary to events like cricket and lacrosse matches, sports my students have never heard of.

My students come from a background of limited experiences due to financial constraints.

They attend an alternative high school characterized by self-pacing and individualized instruction that helps to meet their academic needs. All of my students have chosen to attend this school because they recognized that something about their previous school experience wasn't working for them; they were not sent here as a punishment. Due to extraordinary life circumstances outside of my students' control, most of them have limited experiences with any other culture than their own. Everyday I hope to broaden their experiences and deepen their understanding about their world through engaging learning activities that requiring DOING instead of only reading and writing.

My Project

A cricket set and lacrosse supplies would not only help me teach my students about these fun and unique international sports in compliance with the academic standards for Geography and History of the World, but it would also help me move beyond the four walls of my classroom to the gym or outside when the weather is nice and get the students actively involved in learning by doing.

Engaging learning experiences are just as important as promoting an active lifestyle.
