International Refugees Learn English through Literature

My English-Learning students need 7 headphones and 4 personal CD players to listen to high quality literature on compact disks.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Hall's classroom raised $383

This project is fully funded

Urban school district is a national relocation area for international refugees! I teach middle school ESOL (English as a Second Language). Because of multiple criteria, our district has been deemed by the US government as a national refugee relocation area. Half of the 400+ students in our school are non-native! Eighty percent of our students receive free and reduced lunch. I have students from Somalia, Sudan, Liberia, Mexico, Russia, Turkey, Bosnia, Uzbekistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Afghanistan, Haiti, Iraq, Myanmar... These students need to learn English quickly so they can do well in other curricular areas and in life! Students learn English quickly when they are immersed in culture and have opportunities to speak that are scaffolded with properly modeled support.

Middle schoolers are all about relationships! They easily get 'hooked' into the DRAMA of a good novel. Hearing the novels read aloud helps international students hear the English language modeled properly. Each student receives individual grammar, pronunciation, writing, vocabulary, and culture lessons from the context of his own self-selected novel. We have no funding for the technology for this project. I am implementing it already in my classroom, but have limited headphones and cd players. Students often lose out because of lack of access to technology. I often purchase these items myself when I can afford it.

I've got three radios with cd players that I have borrowed and two headphones. My largest class is 27 students. I would like a total of 7 listening centers so the students in my largest class can rotate and each student will have a turn at a listening/speaking center during each class period.

Your support will enable my students to learn English authentically and quickly. They will be ever so grateful!
